Saturday morning we drove directly to the Dorotheen Glass Hut in Wolfach, Germany. It did not disappoint. For seven euros you could blow your own glass vase. We watched a few demonstrations and then I decided I was brave enough to give it a try.
Heating the glass.
Blowing the glass.
Shaving and sanding the top of the vase.
The finished product. I am in love.
Attached to the glass hut was a traditional German restaurant. Daniel enjoyed a large brot mit pommes frites and I had some rather delicious, VERY too cheesy Spätzle.
After a filling lunch we hopped back in our Auto and headed to Triberg, Germany to see Germany's highest waterfall.
Despite it's extremely touristy-ness, we still enjoyed walking around Triberg and checking out some of the clocks. We had started the trip with a tentative plan to buy a cuckoo clock and wanted to check out all of our options. We went into the house of 1,000 clocks like all the books (except our pal Rick) recommended and weren't too impressed . . . so, it was time to make the hike UP hill to German's highest water fall -- the Triberg Wasserfalle.
After hiking to the top and back down again, we headed towards our hotel for the night. We check in and research a good spot for dinner. The place we wanted to go ended up being closed so we walked down the street and enjoyed another simple, traditional German meal. Not as good as lunch, but we were hungry and the environment was relaxed and warm.
First stop day two - world's largest cuckoo clock.
While we waited for the bird to make its appearance we decided to do what any big kids would do - play on the teeter-totter.
The inside of the house turned clock.
After experiencing the of the cuckoo clock, we ventured back into town to visit Oli's Schnitzstube to decide once and for all if we were "cuckoo clock people". Oli's was a personally recommended stop from our neighbors the Coopers.
Can't say enough good things about this shop. The shop was quiet, only one other family came in the entire time we were there (about an hour or so). One of the store's employees gave us a detailed history lesson and educated us on the differences between "real" clocks and fakes, showing us the wood work and markings of an authentic clock.
Turns out, we are cuckoo clock people.
And the winner is . . .
This beauty!
Now proudly hanging in our "book nook" under the stairs. A happy reminder of our weekend in the Black Forest and just one more thing to help document our time here in Germany when we return to the States. . . . one of my favorite features about the clock is the ability to turn the bird "on" and "off" as we choose. That way, when we go to bed at night, we don't have to deal with the charming little well meaning bird waking us up before we're ready.
